Research indicates black pets are less likely to be adopted than their colorful counterparts.

Black cats aren't bad luck. In England King Charles I had a prized black cat that he swore brought him good luck. Welcome and I agree that black cats are not bad luck. This fear of black cats appears to stem from medieval times when an animal with dark feathers or fur including crows and ravens signaled death.

Cultural symbolism and puritanical propaganda have propelled black cats into the spotlight for better or worse. In fact in a lot of places and cultures theyre actually a symbol of good luck and prosperity. There is however the lingering problem with homeless black cats and dogs too.

Cats supposedly have nine lives and five out of our seven cats happen to be black-furred. From the medieval belief that they were all the pets of witches to a modern day fear that deems them unlucky to walk by theyve been stuck with superstition for a long time. However we have good news.

Black cats have been subject of myths and superstitions for centuries and not always associated with bad luck. Black cats do not cause bad luck they are not signs of the devil and they most certainly do not deserve to be greeted with derision by humans.
